Guide To Brew Absinthe

August 21, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

It is necessary to know about brewing Absinthe at home where there is unavailability of real wormwood Absinthe.

Henri-Louis Pernod used a wine base and herbs including aniseed, hyssop, fennel, lemon balm, star anise, angelica, veronica, juniper, dittany and nutmeg for making his Green Fairy. Czech company Sebor use a blend of 13 herbs, including chamomile and mint in addition to wormwood,  and a 100 year old recipe to make their Absinthe.

There are 3 main ways to make your own Absinthe drink:-

1.A person will require a recipe to distill his own Absinthe liquor.
2.Use an Absinthe Kit with a blend of herbs and instructions.
3.Use an Absinthe essence

How to Brew Absinthe Using a Recipe

Distilling liquor at home is illegal in most countries unless you have a license and is quite complicated. Typical home-brew recipes include:-

– Wormwood (Grande Wormwood, Artemisia Absinthium)
– Information about Green Anise
– Fennel
– Alcohol

The ingredients are first macerated for several hours, heated and then slowly distilled and then colored with extra herbs such as lemon balm, hyssop and petite wormwood. One has to heat the mixture again, then filter and dilute it.

Other recipes only require a blend of herbs with alcohol. Just for example:-
– 30g/ 1 ounce dried Wormwood is required
– Need of 1 teaspoon of hyssop
– 1 tablespoon angelica is also important
– 1 pinch of fennel seeds is required
– 1 teaspoon of lemon balm
– Take ¼ teaspoon each of caraway seeds and coriander seeds
– 1 liter of Everclear or vodka

In a bottle mix chopped dried wormwood with the alcohol and leave for 1-2 weeks in a cool dark place. Mix the sieved wormwood with the other herbs. Refilter after 3 or 4 days. This is the real Absinthe.

Brewing Absinthe at home in these ways is not recommended. Distillation is necessary for getting real Absinthe.

How To Brew Absinthe with a Herbal Blend Kit

There are many different herbal kits on sale online, for example the kits from  Green Devil. One can buy their kits to get these things
– Unique micron filtration system is done for them.

Volume Of Alcohol In Absinthe

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

There has been much controversy regarding the thujone levels in Absinthe and whether Absinthe can really make you hallucinate but what about its alcohol content – How much alcohol is in Absinthe?

Due to the label on all commercial alcoholic drinks about alcohol content people are capable for making informed decisions about drinking them and how much to consume.

The measurement of alcohol content is done by a hydrometer. A hydrometer seems slightly like a fishing float with a thermometer attached. When the hydrometer is put in liquid it floats upright. The water line will be at the level marked 1 after putting it in water.000, if it is put in sugared water the level will be higher because the water is denser. When the hydrometer is used in fermenting alcohol the float moves lower as the sugar is eaten by the yeast. A person needs to take the first measurement with the sugar but before the yeast is added and then the final measurement after the yeast has completed fermentation while preparing alcohol.

Alcohol by volume is known by the following formula
Alcohol content can be calculated by the formula Original gravity – Final gravity x 131 = Alcohol by volume.

Label is used for the alcohol by volume content of drinks in the EU and the United States but a few countries uses the proof. One can find proof to be approximately two times more alcohol by volume.

Different brands of Absinthe have different alcohol contents. Look at the following statistics:-

Lucid Absinthe 62% abv (124 proof)
Alcohol by volume is 53% in La Clandestine Absinthe
Sebor contains 55% abv
The alcohol content is found to be 60% in Pere Kermanns
The alcohol content in Pernod Absinthe is 68% abv
The alcohol content in Mari Mayans Collectors 70 is 70% abv (140 proof)
Knowledge of La Fee XS Absinthe Suisse 53% abv (106 proof)
The alcohol content is found to be 68% abv (136 proof) in La Fee XS Absinthe Francaise
La Fee Bohemian 70% abv (140 proof)
La Fee Parisian 68% abv (136 proof)
The alcohol by volume is 53% abv (106 proof) in Kubler 53
Doubs Mystique Carte D’Or contains 65% abv of alcohol
Roquette 1797 75% abv (150 proof)
The volume of alcohol in Jade PF 1901 is 68% abv
The alcohol content in Jade Edouard is 72% abv (144 proof)
Ideas about Jade Verte Suisse 65% abv (130 proof)
Jade Nouvelle Orleans 68% abv (136 proof)

As you can see Absinthe can range from 53% abv to 75% abv, quite a difference. Now, let’s compare those levels to other alcoholic drinks:-

Absolut Blue Vodka 40% abv (80 proof)
38% abv (76 proof) is there in Jose Cuervo Gold Tequila
The volume of alcohol in beer is about 4 to 5%.
Alcohol by volume in Table Wine is 9-12%.
The availibility of alcohol is 40% in Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch Whisky.
Everclear 95% abv (190 proof)

No other alcoholic drink seems to come close to Absinthe!

There can be differences in alcohol content of homemade Absinthes. An Absinthe essence is available at AbsintheKit.com.A person can see a great difference in the alcohol content of Absolut vodka and the Everclear.

Absinthe was banned in the 1900s because of claims that thujone, the chemical in wormwood, was like THC in the drug cannabis and that it was psychoactive and caused psychedelic effects. Consumption of enough amount of any liquor can be dangerous to health. As people in Memphis have understood this so Memphis was the city that drank the least alcohol in the USA in the year 2006.

Although alcohol is fine if consumed in moderation but one should know about alcohol content in Absinthe and other drinks.

Study Of Artemisia Absinthium

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

Artemisia Absinthiumis the botanical and Latin name for the plant Common Wormwood. The name “Artemisia” was kept from the name of the Greek Goddess Artemis. Artemis was famous goddess of forests and hills, of the hunt and also a defender of children. Later Artemis and the moon was corelated. People believed that the Latin “Absinthium” occurred from the Ancient Greek for “unenjoyable” due to wormwood’s bitter taste.

The Common Wormwood plant generally grows in rocky areas and on arid ground in Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean. It has also been found growing in parts of North America after spreading from people’s gardens. The different names for common wormwood are armoise, green ginger and grande wormwood.

The silver gray leaves and tiny yellow flowers are attraction of wormwood plants. The production of Wormwood oil is done from the tiny glands on the leaves. The Artemisia group of plants also includes tarragon, sagebrush, sweet wormwood, Levant wormwood, silver king artemisia, Roman wormwood and southernwood. The Artemisia plants are members of the Aster family of plants.

Wormwood has been used as a herbal medicine since ancient times and its medical uses include:-
– Easing labor pains in women.
– The poisoning from toadstools and hemlock can be counteracted.
– A very good antiseptic.
– The problems related to digestion is solved by it. Wormwood may be used in solving the problems of stomach acid.
– It is also being used as a cardiac stimulant in pharmaceuticals.
– One can use it in reducing fevers.
– It can help in discharging intestinal worms.
– It was mainly taken as a tonic.

There is research claiming that wormwood may be effective in treating Alzheimer’s disease and Crohn’s disease.

Effects of Artemisia Absinthium

Wormwood is a key ingredient in the liquor Absinthe, the Green Fairy, which was banned in many countries in the early 1900s. Absinthe is named after this herb which also gives the drink its characteristic bitter taste,

Absinthe was banned because of its alleged psychedelic effects. It was thought to cause hallucinations and to drive people insane. Absinthe was also linked to the Bohemian culture of Parisian Montmartre with its loose morals, courtesans and artists and writers.

The chemical thujone and the THC are said to be similar. As Absinthe is a strong spirit so a person will be comatose before experiencing the effects of thujone in it!

Drinking Absinthe is just as safe as drinking any strong spirit but it should be consumed in moderation because it is about twice as strong as whisky and vodka.

An Absinthe without Artemisia Absinthium is not the real Absinthe. Besides the real Green Fairy “fake” Absinthes are also available which are produced from other herbs and flavorings. If you want the real thing you must check that they contain thujone or Common Wormwood or use essences, such as those from AbsintheKit.com, to make your own Absinthe containing Artemisia Absinthium.

Importance Of Absinthe Wormwood

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

Absinthe wormwood is normally Artemisia Absinthium or Grand Wormwood which is actually a variety of wormwood which does not contain a vast amount of the chemical thujone. Roman Wormwood also contains thujone alike the Grand Wormwood so drinks with two types of wormwood may contain more thujone. Thujone amounts can differ between brands significantly, some Absinthes only have negligible amounts of thujone, whereas others have up to 35mg/kg. Only Absinthe which has negligible amounts of thujone is legal for sale in the USA because thujone is an illegal food additive there.

Controversy is there about Absinthe Wormwood?

Common Wormwood, Artemisia Absinthium was used for medicinal purpose from Ancient times. One has used it :-
– To decrease poisoning caused by toadstools and hemlock.
– How to use as a tonic .
– Helps in lowering down a fever.
– As a digestive stimulant.
– Parasitic intestinal worms can be treated.
It is the herb Wormwood which gives Absinthe its bitterness, its green color and its name. The essential herbal oils in Absinthe are also responsible for the famous “louche” effect, the cloudy that happens when water is added to the drink.
In the early 1900s Absinthe was banned in many countries because it contained the chemical thujone which has alleged harmful effects. Absinthe drinking was believed to be a danger on a country. A french man killed his whole family after drinking Absinthe and lots of other alcohols for which Absinthe was claimed to be the basic cause!
Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and Oscar Wilde are among the writers and artists who enjoyed this drink before it was illegalized. Absinthe was never restricted in the UK, Spain, Portugal or the Czech Republic though banned in many European countries.

Absinthe Wormwood Revival

There was never any real evidence linking Absinthe drinking to hallucinations or insanity and it is now known that Absinthe is no worse than any other highly alcoholic drink. As Absinthe has approximately twice the alcoholic content in comparison to other drinks so it should be consumed in moderation but the wormwood in it is not harmful at all. The combination of the sedative effects of some of the herbs (and the alcohol content)and the stimulating effects of the Wormwood and other herbs can make a person feel a funny lucid or clear headed type of drunkenness when consuming heavy dose of Absinthe.

Absinthe drinking became a revival after it’s relegalization in many countries. There are many different types and brands of Absinthe available to buy and buyers can even order Absinthe essence, to make their own Absinthe, online from companies like AbsintheKit.com.

The European Union and the United States allow only trace amounts of thujone which is an important content of Absinthe. One should get Absinthe that contain real wormwood and herbs.

Process Of Using Absinthe

August 20, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

An Absinthe revival can be experienced due to the authorization of some brands of Absinthe in 2007 in the United States. Yet, some people don’t really know how to use Absinthe correctly or even what Absinthe is.

What is Absinthe

Absinthe is not a hallucinogen or a drug. It is a strong alcoholic beverage with an alcohol by volume of up to 75% and an anise flavor.

In the 18th century Absinthe was made as a medicine by Dr Pierre Ordinaire of Switzerland for his patients. Absinthe was distilled and sold by Henri-Louis Pernod commercially by the turn of the 19th century. Pernod used a wine alcohol base distilled with variety of natural herbs and also fennel, aniseed, star anise, wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium),  hyssop, lemon balm, angelica, juniper, dittany, nutmeg and melissa.

People of France prefer Absinthe to wine. As the Absinthe bars became famous the “Ritual” or traditional method of using and preparing Absinthe was born.

Absinthe was banned in France in 1915 after it was claimed that Absinthe contained psychoactive chemicals and cause hallucinations, convulsions, insanity and death. It is now known that these claims were false. These effects are not caused by Absinthe. In most of the nations Absinthe was legalized in the 1990s.

How to Use Absinthe the Traditional Way

To prepare Absinthe in the traditional way is to use the “Ritual”.
These are necessary items :-
– One must have the Absinthe glass or a large glass.
– Absinthe
– An Absinthe spoon– replica glasses and spoons can be purchased online at AbsintheKit.com along with top-quality Absinthe essences to make your own Absinthe. One can prepare his own Absinthe by using top-quality Absinthe essences.
– A sugar cube is needed.
– Chilled carafe iced water.

A shot of Absinthe is needed to flow into the glass.
One has to rest the spoon on the rim of the glass and then put the sugar cube on it.
One has to drop slowly the iced water over the sugar to dissolve it.
The Absinthe louche is seen as the water mixes into the Absinthe. The mixture louches due to the insolubility of the essential oils in water.
One can stir Absinthe to feel the taste of the Green Fairy.

However Absinthe will not give hallucinations but it is a strong drink and can be consumed easily. Absinthe is made out of a curious blend of herbs – some are naturally sedative in nature and others are stimulants. One can feel a very different drunkenness with this blend of herbs. It is also popular as a “clear headed” drunkenness.

The Czech or Bohemian Method

With this method, once you have poured the shot of Absinthe into the glass you dip the sugar cube into the alcohol and then set it alight on the spoon with a match. After the caramelization and melting of sugar the iced water van be added into the Absinthe.

A person cannot have that fun with serious method as experienced with the Bohemian method. It can be dangerous as the Absinthe glass can burn also! It is necessary to take care.

Though the Ritual is the most popular way of using Absinthe but it can also be used in cocktails.

Absinthe Information

August 19, 2009 · by admin2014 ·

It is difficult to select the right one as there are many contradictory Absinthe information available online and in books.

Misleading Absinthe Information

One book “Absinthe The Cocaine of the 19th Century: A History of the Hallucinogenic Drug and its Effect on Artists and Writersin Europe and the United States” by Doris Lanier, compares Absinthe to drugs such as cocaine because it was said to be addictive, to give a sense of euphoria, have psychedelic effects and weaken the brain and other faculties.

The period during which Absinthe became a well known product is known as “The Great Binge”. This was a time when numerous of today’s unauthorized drugs such as crack cocaine, morphine and heroin were developed and used by people for medicine, on prescription for coughs etc. Even in drinks. Absinthe, Vin Maraiani and Coca Cola were a few famous drinks in bars. As these drugs and drinks were all thought to be harmless so they were widely consumed throughout Europe.

The reason to link Absinthe with these drugs was it’s popularity with Bohemian artists and writers and also with the harlots of the Moulin Rouge and Montmartre.

Thujone was claimed both psychoactive and similar to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in the drug cannabis. The essential oils contain THC and Thujone which affects the central nervous system and the GABA receptors in the brain respectively. The consumption of wormwood in large quantities give rise to the same effects as caused by the cannabis intoxication.

Several countries banned Absinthe along with some drugs in the early 1900s. Because of the madness it was illegalized that time. People lumped Absinthe, the Green Fairy, together with drugs like heroin (the White Fairy), cannabis and cocaine and even now there are many people and websites who mention Absinthe in the same sentence as magic mushrooms, LSD, weed, cannabis and ecstasy.

Absinthe Information – What we now know

We know that medical studies on Absintheand wormwood in the past were not accurate and were “colored” by the prohibition movement of the time and the worry that Absinthe was a drug. The thujone content in Absinthe is so less that it cannot have any dangerous effects. Even tests on vintage pre ban Absinthe has proved that it hardly contained any thujone at all. A person would die of alcohol poisoning long before being affected with thujone.

Studies and research have caused various nations to relegalize Absinthe due to which it can now be enjoyed everywhere across the world.

Because of it’s high proof one has no problem to get drunk on Absinthe. One must be careful while consuming it as it has twice the alcohol content. A person drinking Absinthe will experience intoxication different from other spirits or fermented beverages. A number of people describe it as a “lucid” or “clear headed” kind of drunkenness. The blend of herbs and the alcohol can explain this. Some people enhance these qualities by making cocktails containing Absinthe and the caffeine loaded drink Red Bull!

The misleading Absinthe information can make a person to buy Absinthe to give him vivid hallucinations. A person can have entertainment while making this herbal alcoholic drink. Real, top-quality Absinthe essences is available at AbsintheKit.com which can be used in the making of own wormwood Absinthe.AbsintheKit.com is a fun and economical way to enjoy Absinthe.

Absinthe is also prepared with the other herbs and essential oils like Fennel, green aniseed, star anise, hyssop, lemon balm, juniper, angelica, licorice, dittany, coriander, nutmeg and sweet flag.
